Birding Road Trip to Texas – Day 3

Day three of the trip, we have already reached Portal, near the border of Arizona and New Mexico. This magical village in the foothills of the Chiricahua Mountains is the best spot in the entire ABA area to see the stunning Blue-throated Mountain-gem.

In the village, one of the best spot is the Cave Creak Ranch, where several feeders are hunged at the front office. As soon as we arrives, we are surrounded by Wild Turkeys, running everywhere in search of food. After taking photos of the turkeys, we walked towards the hummingbird feeders. Just as we get near, a gigantic hummingbird dived boomed towards us, and landed on one of th feeders. As I rised my camera, it rised it’s head, and the throat reflects a brilliant sapphire like blue. It is the Blue-throated Mountain-gem! It flew around, defending its feeders and landed in to a nearby pine tree.

We then settled down at the seats at the office facing the feeders. After seeing a lot of special birds, it is time to leave for TEXAS! After a quik check at Dave Jesper’s feeders, we are on our way through New Mexico towards Davis Mountains in Texas!
